This made me smile…

I had a great time with Jaelyn and Josh last week… I miss them so much. For those who know me, I’m not going to talk too much about the “elephant in the room” except that the elephant belongs to me. Maybe one day I’ll write about my elephant…

Anyway, I’ve finally cleaned up the remains of my former residence and I’ve uncovered numerous old and unfinished projects, project ideas, old mp3s… etc etc…

So here is today’s post… It’s remix I “redisovered” in a spindle of archived CDs. It’s Snoop Dogg’s classic, “Gin and Juice”… If you don’t know the song, Google it… or watch it on YouTube

Gin And Juice Gansta Remix… I mean GANSTA!

Kaba Modern pt. 2… and pt. 3?

…So Kaba Modern loved me so much, I did their mix the very next year as well… :) …and the year after… and the year after that… :( and so on and so forth…

…plus I did a bunch of intermediate mixes for special performances…

…and a bunch of little mixes for sororities and fraternities…

I became a DJ whore. I made choreography mixes for every organization under the sun as well as did club events for anyone who’d ask me to come out… Sometimes I’d do it for free… Which I guess made me a slut and not a whore…

Anyway, here are two other mixes from the Kaba Modern archive… I believe this was ‘96 and ‘97? Geez… I don’t remember which mix came first… so I’m just gonna post both of them up… Forgive me. I’m old.

…By the way, there is a little Michael vs. Janet medley in the middle of one of these mixes… Say what you want about Michael Jackson’s legal troubles, he moved the world with his music… R.I.P. *sniff* Tito give me some tissue…

A long time ago…

…in a galaxy far, far away…

I was a freshman at the University Of California at Irvine… Like most colleges, there were various organizations and clubs that students could join to meet friends and do social activities… And like a Filipino lemming, I joined the campus’ Filipino culture club, Kababayan. (Everyone was doing it… lol)

Anyway, every year the club holds their annual Filipino culture night which usually consists of several cultural dances all tied together via a storyline which related to the experiences of Filipinos today. That year, I tried out for the Kababayan Modern dance suite… (Kaba Modern for short.) This suite covered dances outside of the “traditional” Filipino culture. In other words, it allowed us to bust it hip-hop style yo!!! :P But in all seriousness, hip-hop dance and the culture in general has permeated the Filipino culture. I could go into how American culture in general has effected Pinoys globally, but obviously that’s outside the scope of this blog…

To make a long story short, I actually became a member of Kaba Modern one year after its conception. Back then, it was just a component of a theatrical showcase… We didn’t go battle other crews, strangers off the street didn’t recognize the name or members in the group… etc etc… Little did I know that Kaba Modern would continue to grow and become a world famous dance crew. (See MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew Season 1.)

That year, I danced my ass off… I met my best college buds thru that crew. It really did become a family… And the very next year, I didn’t make the cut! (Which was a bummer since I tried out as a duo with one of my friends who did make it, I helped choreo the tryout routine, AND the fact that one my roomies was a judge. lol)

My dance career died the year I was cut, but it gave me time to focus on another hobby: DJing. The year that I didn’t make it, Kaba Modern grew in skill, but the choreography music sucked… So the very next year, I was recruited back into Kaba Modern as their DJ. I lived in the “Kaba Modern” house. My roomies were my best friends, they were all Kaba Modern coordinators and all Kaba Modern dancers became honorary roommates, and we all slacked off in academics… We ate, drank, and slept hip-hop music and dance… All I remember was late nights of studying dance crew videos and watching my friends choreograph as they threw me ideas to put into the mix. I focused on being a better DJ and I did my share of studying and networking with other DJs in the ever growing SoCal DJ community. Although I failed miserably academically, those times were my fondest. To my friends from back in the day, I miss you all!!!

So this was my first ever Kaba Modern mix… I found it in a bunch of mp3 archives my friend gave to me a few years ago… (The original mix was mastered on cassette!!!) The mix was a journey of several “modern” styles ranging from Disco to Jazz to Hip-Hop. I knew I had to represent proper that year because the year I actually danced, the music was done by DJ Melo-D (UCI alum David Mendoza)… By the time that I became Kaba Modern’s DJ, Melo-D and the rest of the Beat Junkies were killing DJs world wide in DJ competitions.

I pulled out all the stops in this mix… Video game sfx, quirky movie themes, artist medleys, crazy audio edits… I even sampled a porno from a VHS tape to throw into the “nasty” section! Anyway, I hope you like it… Here it goes…

My First Kaba Modern Mix Ever

A little part of me died the other day…

…cuz I started selling off my vinyl. The age of digitized music has killed the “old school” in me. I no longer have to save up and troll the crates of the local Ameoba or Rasputin Records to find that one hard to find 12 inch vinyl… Nowadays, I can just jump online with the confidence that someone out there has it. It’s a sad day indeed… But to move forward, one must learn to let go…

Everytime a DJ sells off his vinyl, an angel loses his hands… after going deaf. *sniff*

In honor of the old school, I’ve decided to create an “Daily Old Skool” page where I’ll occasionally post a “classic” track and maybe a pic to reminisce to… CHECK IT OUT!

For Jaelyn…

Total Eclipse Of The Heart: The Literal Video Version

I’m late on this viral vid… Have you ever watched a music vid and wondered, “How does this video relate to the song?” Well, some funny people out there have solved conundrum for at least one video by creating a literal translation of the happenings of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”. (The original is already an 80’s classic…) Just watch.

…I wish I had as much free time on my hands as the creators of this video…

Beating off…

A long time ago… In a galaxy far far away… My friends, Rex and Rod owned this old ass Amiga computer. It was leaps and bounds greater than my Commodore 64… It had all these cool apps and video games etc… But one of the coolest things was this application that allowed you to make music. I forgot the name of the program, but whenever I’d go there I’d toy with it every once and awhile and make these simple beats… Rod would always save the project file under one of the following naming conventions: “John Beats Off” or “John’s Beat Off”…

Little did I know that audio and music and DJing would become a long lasting hobby. I probably should have taken beating off more seriously back then.

Anyway, during my spare time this week in Charlotte, NC I spent “composing” / toying around with this audio application called Ableton Live 8 and it reminded me of those days back in ‘88 when all I had to do was homework, play basketball, and eat Totino’s microwave pizza… and of course, beat off…

Here’s the beat I made…

I call it… “Angel Battlion Bomb Drop” Sounds like an Japanese anime title eh? Well, it’s simply because the beat makes me envision a horde of angels eclipsing the sky, dropping bombs of love and crushing enemies.. all drawn into an action packed anime sequence. An off the wall thought perhaps? Who cares! I beat off and that’s what I see when I listen to it!

Dagnabbit!!!

Yet another WordPress re-install / re-build?! Anyway… I’ve been in North Carolina for the past few days at an exciting radiology tradeshow. It was awesome… NOT.

By the way… Here’s the Bon Jovi “Dead Or Alive” jazzy remix I did the other week… I don’t expect everyone to like it, but it’s built from the ground up using the acapella and allowed me to warm up some “creative” chops… (…and I use the term “creative” loosely…)
